Great News for Families in the Interior, OCJ, and Vancouver Island: Early Resolution Expands in Family Court This May 1!

As a family law lawyer at Umbrella Law Corporation in New Westminster, British Columbia, I’m excited to share updates that can make legal processes smoother for families across BC. Starting May 1, 2026, the Provincial Court of BC is expanding its early resolution program to the Interior, OCJ, and Vancouver Island regions. This builds on its success in Victoria, Vancouver, Fraser (including our New Westminster area), and other locations.

What is Early Resolution and Why Does it Matter?

Launched gradually since 2019, early resolution offers families a needs assessment and referrals for both legal and non-legal support—like mediation, counseling, or community resources. Most participating families resolve disputes without going to trial, leading to healthier outcomes: reduced future conflict, fewer Adverse Childhood Experiences for kids, and lower costs for health and justice systems.

In our Fraser region, we’ve seen it transform cases for clients dealing with parenting plans or support issues.

Key Areas Covered

Early resolution is now required before filing certain Family Law Act applications, including:

  • Parenting arrangements

  • Child support

  • Contact with a child

  • Guardianship of a child

  • Spousal support

  • Ownership or possession of a companion animal

Check out the official Getting Ready for Family Court guide for more prep tips.

How This Benefits BC Families

For those in the new regions, it’s a chance to settle amicably and avoid court stress. At Umbrella Law, we’ve helped dozens of clients through similar processes—think parenting agreements without months of litigation. Always verify news dates, as policies evolve.
